Is Therapy Covered by Insurance?
Covered by most health benefit plans. Coverage for sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist varies by provider and plan, so we’ve put together some information that could be helpful.
How Insurance Coverage for Psychotherapy Works
Most extended health benefit plans that include mental health coverage will reimburse sessions provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) or Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), up to a set annual maximum.
Coverage details differ from plan to plan. Things that commonly vary include:
- The annual dollar maximum for psychotherapy or counselling
- Whether your plan requires a specific credential (RP)
- Whether the plan reimburses you directly, or allows direct billing
What to Ask Your Insurance Provider
- “Does my plan cover sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist (RP)?”
- “What is my annual maximum for psychotherapy or counselling?”
- “How do I submit claims?”

Common Questions About Insurance & Therapy
Does insurance cover online therapy? Yes! Most workplace and private insurance plans cover online sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist the same way they cover in-person sessions. If you are unsure you can confirm this with your provider.
Do I need a referral from my doctor? Most plans do not require a doctor referral. Some plans may require one. This is one of the key questions to ask your provider directly.
What if my plan doesn’t fully cover the cost? If your coverage doesn’t fully cover your therapist’s fee, or you don’t currently have coverage, we also offer a limited number of sliding scale spots. We want therapy to be accessible and will work with you to find a solution that meets your needs.
Will I get a receipt for my sessions? Yes. You’ll receive a receipt after each paid session with the information most insurance providers require for reimbursement, including credential and registration details.
